May 31st Hooked on Science Kickoff with Jason Lindsey at Fohs Hall

Join us at Fohs Hall for a special program for the whole family! Save the date at Fohs Hall where Mr. Science will wow us with underwater science activities. Find out more about our special guest at www.hookedonscience.org! Jason Lindsey, aka “Mr. Science, with Hooked on Science, is a nationally-recognized STEM educator, science multimedia journalist, digital meteorologist, and author. He’s appeared on the NBC Today Show, Fox & Friends, RFD-TV, WeatherNation, and television stations, across the United States, getting America “Hooked on Science.”

June 7  Bright Star Theatre Presents: The Little Mermaid at Fohs Hall

Families are invited to attend this wonderful performance of a family favorite at Fohs Hall! The story follows the adventures of a mermaid who whishes to become human and win the heart of a human prince. This tale of love and loss explores the difficulty of being yourself in unfamiliar waters.

June 14 Shark Week

This enrichment activity is designed to help kids learn all about sharks. Make an origami shark bookmark, play a shark game called “Jaws of the Shark”, and make a 3-D fish bowl for your little paper shark!

June 21 Inflatable Ocean Animals

Imagine and design inflatable ocean animals using recycled materials like chip bags. This activity teaches about the field of Pneumatics, a field of science that uses air under pressure, like that used in deep sea diving. Bring your ocean animals to life!

June 28 Great Tentacles!

Learn all about our many-limbed friend, the octopus! Mimic how they move by using a balloon and other materials, make a pipe cleaner octopus or a socktopus, and find out why these fun creatures have no bones!

July 20 End of Summer Reading Pool Party & Prizes 6:30 to 9:00 pm at Marion Golf & Pool

Did you attend programs with us at the library and return your reading trackers? Celebrate with us at a pool party for super readers! Fun water games and snacks will be provided. A lifeguard will be present but parents cannot leave children unattended.

June 2 Ahoy Matey! Pirate Day

Make your own pirate hooks, play a pirate hook game, decorate a treasure chest and make your own jewels of the sea!

June 9 Into the Abyss: Ocean Zones

Deep dive into learning with Ms. Melissa to learn about the zones of the ocean from the Sunlight Zone to the Trenches. Watch videos about the environment in each zone, the animals who live there, play games, and make a science journal to take home.

June 16 Seas the Day

Today, learn all about seashells and ocean animals at CCPL. We will paint seashells, sort them, and figure out which ones sink or float. We’ll make ocean squish bags and go fishing for ocean animals to learn about!

June 23 Set Sail for an Adventure Back in Time

Learn all about the Titanic, go on a mock dig for fake artifacts from the Titanic and make artifact bottles! During the program, you’ll learn about what artifacts were found, the story about this famous shipwreck, and you’ll get to keep your boarding pass.

June 30 Fin-Tastic Ocean Animals 

Make sea creature terrariums using recycled plastic bottles and jars with Ms. Melissa! Make upcycled jellyfish and a water bottle sea creature!

July 5 @ 2:00 pm Bermuda Triangle Escape Room You are a passenger on a plane heading to San Juan, Puerto Rico when your plane goes missing. Follow the clues to help your captain navigate the plane safely out.

July 12 @ 2:00pm D&D: The Missing Misty Mermaid  Players have been hired by the town council of Saltmarsh to investigate the disappearance of some local fishermen who worked on the well-known vessel The Misty Mermaid, which went missing in a storm and hasn’t been seen since. You are tasked with finding the vessel and its crew.

July 19 @ 2:00 pm The Art of Paper Making

Learn about the process of making paper, where the art originated, and different materials used. Paper made today will be used to make the Captain’s Log on Thursday.

June 26 @ 2:00 pm End of Summer Reading Bash: Survivor Island  You made it! Test your survival skills by building a raft with your team out of recyclables, make tiki torches and create a flag for your team. Then play three games to determine your fate. Do you have what it takes? Snacks and drinks provided to help fuel your fight to survive!

Teen Make & Takes  (Thursdays at 2:00 p.m. @ CCPL)

July 7 @ 2:00 pm Marble Mugs

Personalize a mug with marbled ocean or coastline scenes. Using a mixture of nail polish and water, dip a mug to make a marbled effect. If you can’t stay, pick up a make & take bag with supplies and instructions.

June 14 @ 2:00 pm Here Be Monsters: Creating Your Own Map

Learn about cartography and maps of the real world and fantasy worlds, map keys, and the elements used to create a good map. All supplies provided to make an epic map of your room, your city or the world.

July 21 @ 2:00 pm Making A Captain’s Log  

Captain’s logs and ship logs have a rich history and provide insight into life on seafaring vessels. Use handmade paper to make a log and explore bookbinding techniques.

July 28 @ 2:00 pm Jellyfish Lanterns/Circuits 

Learn how to bring the wonder of the ocean to your room by making large lanterns for the library and small night lights you can take home using basic circuits and LED lights.

Adult Summer Reading (For Adults Age 18 & Up)

Summer reading is for adults too! If you are a kid at heart age 18 and over, register for the 2022 Oceans of Possibilities summer reading program. Get your shipboard reading log at the library and start tracking books and audiobooks. Return to CCPL by August 31st at 5:00 p.m. for a chance to win prizes provided by the Friends of the Library. Take a cruise on the SS Seas the Day and complete on-board activities (at the library) or excursions (field trips in Marion and beyond!)
